Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise worked the night shift in the role of a nurse so that she could indulge her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was conscious of her social status and taught her how she could use the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time that she spent in the state to stimulate her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay was a student at University of California Los Angeles when she graduated, where she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of members of the juries. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to switch careers into the publicity sector. DuVernay began her professional career working as a junior press assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. From this position she started her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Aside from PR, her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
